LOCAL author Fay Sampson has taken a new direction in her writing. She recently celebrated the publication of her 50th book. These have been mostly novels for adults and children.

On May 25 Darton, Longman and Todd published her latest works.

“Prayers for Dementia: and how to live well with it” offers information, advice and prayers on many aspects of this increasingly common condition.

She stresses that a diagnosis need not be treated as an instant tragedy. There will be difficulties to come, but still a much enjoyable life.

There are sections for those with dementia, for their carers, and for family, friends and the wider community. Half the royalties will go the Alzheimer’s Society.

The cost is £5.99 ISBN 978-0-232-53297-5.

“Prayers for Depression: and how best to live with it” follows a similar pattern. It offers information, support and prayers for those with depression and for family, friends and the wider circle.

It doesn’t offer easy answers, but understanding and practical help. Half the royalties will go to Mind UK.

The cost is £5.99 ISBN 978-0-232-53295-1.

Fay Sampson was inspired to write “Prayers for Dementia” by cases of dementia in her own family, including her husband. There is an increasing awareness of dementia, with moves to make our society more dementia-friendly.

Depression, too, is becoming better recognised and understood. It can strike even in childhood. It needs our understanding.

The books are attractively produced and would make good gift books.

Fay Sampson lives with her husband in a Tudor cottage in Tedburn St Mary.

She was born in Devon, grew up in Lympstone and attended Exeter University. A number of her books have won, or been shortlisted for, awards.
