HAVING attended the presentation by the NHS regarding the possible closure of the Stroke Unit in Crediton, I feel I now have a clearer picture of the problem.

The people of this country have indicated that they wish to have Aftercare in their own homes. The NHS has been charged with the task of providing it.

Experience has shown that recovery times are quicker when this happens.

It is, of course, not a cost-effective way, with staff travelling between calls.

If the Stroke Unit is closed, it will, in my mind, raise the question of the viability of the rest of the unit.

It is no good us wailing and waving banners. What we must do it to provide the NHS with reasoned arguments as to why the Unit should be retained and perhaps how the use of Crediton Hospital could be expanded.

One way springs to mind. Could it be used for respite care? During my late wife's illness I developed a poisoned arm and she had to be taken to Hatherleigh, as there was nothing nearer.

As I am deaf, I need to see an Audiologist regularly and I am able to do so at Crediton Hospital saving me and many others having to go to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

Could there be other such services introduced?

It is no good us giving fragmented ideas, we must speak as one. What we need and quickly is for all the groups in the town to get together quickly and put forward a reasoned case.

Perhaps the Devon Senior Voice might be able to do this as they have wider remit?

It is up to you, Crediton. No man or one group can do it alone.
