CENTRAL Devon MP Mel Stride was in Crediton on Friday, December 11, promoting the safe re-opening of our businesses and urging residents to shop locally in the run up to Christmas.

He made his appeal alongside former Crediton Mid Devon District Councillor Martin Binks.

Mel said: “There is no need to fear going out - shops in Crediton have done an outstanding job in making their premises Covid-secure – and every pound spent supporting a local business during the next few weeks is a pound spent supporting local families and protecting local jobs.”

Martin said: “It was great to catch up with Mel and discuss the challenges facing local traders. We have a fantastic variety of independent shops here in Crediton and it’s important that we support them in the run up to Christmas.

"I will certainly be doing as much of my Christmas shopping here in Crediton as I can and I encourage others to do the same.”

During his visit Mel spoke with local business owners and was encouraged by how trade appears to be growing in the run up to Christmas.

He said: “There are obviously still many challenges – particularly for businesses who are impacted by Devon’s Tier 2 status such as pubs. But there was certainly a feeling of cautious optimism in Crediton today.

"For my part I will continue to push for our county to be promoted to Tier 1 at the earliest opportunity and will continue to fight for support for our vital local businesses.”
