MOTORISTS faced challenging conditions in the Crediton area when several inches of snow fell from about 3pm on Thursday, January 31.
Two minor road traffic accidents in Crediton High Street caused disruption for the evening commuters and there were other minor road accidents reported.
The snow caused some difficulty for motorists on higher ground and cars were abandoned overnight at St Martin’s Lane in Crediton and in Copplestone.
Lighter snow overnight and sub-zero temperatures caused disruption in parts of the country but major routes were kept open.
During the morning of Friday, February 1, Devon County Council Highways reported that many minor roads were still icy, as well as roads on Dartmoor and Exmoor.
Gritting teams and snow clearance fleets worked throughout the night to minimise disruption.
Roads across the county improved throughout the day on Friday, as highways teams worked hard to clear them.
On high ground, good progress was made with gritters, tractors, ploughs and snow blowers.
Temperatures dropped during the night and Devon County Council reminded people to take care.
In the last 48 hours, more than 2,000 tonnes of grit was used across the Devon highway network.
There was praise for the council’s fleet of front line vehicles, including 49 dedicated gritters as well as snow blowers, tractors and ploughs. And there had been additional support provided by the council’s subcontractors.
Elsewhere, County Council social care teams worked hard with care providers to ensure people who need care at home continued to receive it.
On social media, the public expressed their gratitude: “Thank you, and thanks to your team of snow clearers”, “After a busy night at the airport it was great to be able to arrive home safely. Thank you to everyone involved in keeping Telegraph and the A380 open. Well done everyone”, “Great job by @HighwaysSWEST and @DevonCC keeping the A380 and M5 clear this morning”, “A big thank you to you all for keeping the roads open”, “I have travelled from Willand to Exeter this morning. Your colleagues should be congratulated on their work in clearing the roads. Thank you”, “Our dedicated band of snow wardens have done a fantastic job in their local communities. Many have gone far beyond the call of duty.”
A number of primary schools were closed because of the weather.
