AN EGGESFORD woman has just returned from Edmonton, Canada, having taken part in the World Aquathlon and Triathlon Championships. Peggy Crome, competing in the female 70plus age group, won a Silver medal in the Aquathlon and a Bronze in the Triathlon. She told the Courier: "I was really pleased with my results because earlier this year I had an eye operation which stopped me training properly for nearly two months and the World Championships came a bit too soon for me. "However, I exceeded my own expectations to win two medals when I had not expected to podium in either events." Recently Peggy took part in the very tough European Championships, in June, at Kitzbuhel, Austria. Of this, she said: "This was a very tough course with three very steep hills, one of which was 20 per cent. "In addition to this after a few days of warm, dry conditions, the weather turned and we competed in wind and rain which made the downhill bike sections very dangerous and all our technical cycling skills were called on to stay safe. "I managed to complete safely and win the Gold medal. "I was lucky enough to get a photo with Alistair Brownlee (Olympic gold medalist), with my gold medal. He also won gold for the Elite." Peggy said she would like to thank The Bike Shed of Crediton for its support in getting her to the start line! She also thanked Mid Devon District Council for supporting GB athletes by allowing them to use their sporting facilities and in her case, particularly, the swimming pool at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre. Peggy has represented Great Britain, winning numerous World and European titles over the years. In 2012 at the European Championships in Israel she claimed gold in the women's 65 to 69 years sprint and last year she took part in the World Aquathon and World Triathlon Championships held in London on the same course as the Olympics. She achieved a Gold medal in the World Aquathon and a Silver medal in the World Triathlon Championships. The former British female age-group triathlete of the year completed a 1,000 metre swim and 5k run as part of the World Aquathon event. Alan Quick
