THE Chair of the Friends of Crediton Library, Julie Maddison, recently presented Morchard Bishop Church of England Primary School with a shield for the school with the highest percentage of Summer Reading Challenge finishers at Crediton Library.
This year’s trophy was provided by the Friends of Crediton Library as part of their support of the library and local community.
Children from 21 local schools took part in the challenge at Crediton Library and the percentage of finishers was worked out using their school roll so that no school was disadvantaged.
Almost 11,000 children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge across Devon this year, with 892 children signing up to become members of Devon Libraries for the first time.
The Challenge, a national initiative by the Reading Agency and delivered in libraries, encourages children to read six books during the long summer holiday to help to prevent the trend for children’s reading skills to dip over the holidays.
As the children record the books they have read they receive stickers and when they complete the challenge they receive a medal and certificate.Photo: At Crediton Library, from left, Sue Lee, (Library Supervisor), Julie Maddison, (Chairman of Friends of Crediton Library), Mr C Sargeant (Headteacher at Morchard Bishop Church of England Primary School and Mrs Hilary Jones (Class 2 teacher) with a group of children from the school who were presented with a shield for winning the 2017 Summer Reading Challenge.
