HAVING written poetry for most of his life about almost any subject, a Morchard Bishop man was challenged by his sister-in-law to do more - so he wrote a story really for children but enjoyed by anyone, about a squirrel.

The result is the book Charm The Enchanted Valley, printed by Hedgerow Print of Crediton and available at Crediton Community Bookshop as well as other local shops.

Illustrations are by Tanya Read, who was another Morchard resident so, as the author said, Charm has been written, illustrated and printed in Devon.

When you remember it has mainly been written to be read to younger children and for older ones to read for themselves, it all comes together. It is a charming book with a little lesson in co-operation although not shoved hard at you, it is there to be picked up and thought about.

In fact there is quite a bit to think about in this book. Unlikely animals rescue others in times of hazard, unlikely friends are made, but it all works.

Jay Bee, the author, had only previously written for his pleasure and for his family. His sister-in-law threw down the challenge and then the family said why not publish the result. So he has. Should the book, or any follow ons, do well, much of the profits will go to medical research.

He has lived in Crediton and area for many years. One summer, sitting on a hill in Brittany looking over the sea, he and his wife said how good it would be to do that more often.

They did, living in France and then Cyprus for a number of years before returning to the South West.

“We have achieved dreams but there is still more we would like to do,” he said. He is also wondering if the book might make a cartoon film.

Charm The Enchanted Valley costs £6.99. A good book to read to children anywhere and an ideal Christmas gift.

It is available at the Crediton Community Bookshop, Once Read and Evans Newsagents, in Crediton, and Church Street Stores at Morchard Bishop.
