NOTICE that Mid Devon District Council was thinking of setting up a South West bank, a type of mutual and possibly in Cullompton because that town has no banks any more was given at this month’s meeting of Crediton Town Council.
Chairman, Cllr Frank Letch, also a district councillor, said that the district council was thinking of putting £49,000 into setting up the bank.
One town councillor remarked that the district council had been selling its assets and now had money to spend.
THOSE WEEDS
Cllr Letch said he had raised at full district council with Cllr Clive Eginton, Leader MDDC, whether town and parish councils would be consulted over weed killing and he had said “no”.
Cllr John Ross asked that Jockey Hill was left alone, he was concerned about the wildlife there.
He added that he had been at a well-attended Sustainable Crediton event when the Bumblebee Trust was there and had a lot of attention.
He also reported that the League of Friends of Crediton Hospital had given up to £1,000 towards the night landing lights for Devon Air Ambulance at Crediton.
SO DANGEROUS
Cllr Ross also said he had been asked to raise the dangers of the Jockey Hill junction with Blagdon where the pavement was so narrow, the road sandwiched between listed buildings on the left and the right and where there was no room for two people, especially one with a buggy or pram, to pass each other.
Cllr Ross added that since the Link Road opened, traffic on Jockey Hill had increased at least three-fold, all using this dangerous junction.
This led to comments about traffic at the primary schools. Cllr Hannah Zorlu saying that Hayward’s had a system where if a parent was seen parking and causing a problem, they would be spoken to by the headteacher and this did seem to be making a difference.
PURDAH WEEKS
Saying that because he was standing for election in May and therefore cannot be photographed or seen to be promoting himself, Cllr Letch reported that he would be going to the CODS show but not allowed to wear his chain of office nor would he be allowed to open the Crediton Bowling Club’s new season in his role as Mayor of Crediton.
Councillors were saying how awkward this could be if members of the Press need to continually check with people.
They were reminded that this was the last meeting of this council as a full council.
