INACTION by Crediton Chamber of Commerce and broken promises of when meetings will take place are causing serious concern for the Mayor of Crediton, Cllr Frank Letch. Mr Letch is so concerned that he has written an open letter to Crediton Chamber of Commerce, which reads as follows: "I wonder if, through the Crediton Courier, I could appeal to the co-chairmen of the Crediton Chamber of Commerce to respond to the several letters and emails we have sent them? "In the distant past there was a good and productive relationship between the Town Council and Chamber but over the past two years the Chamber's silence has been deafening and its activity noticeable by its High Street absence! "We would like their involvement with our efforts to make the High Street attractive and bring people in to the town to the benefi t of High Street businesses. "Earlier in the year Mr Coryton (one of the cochairmen) promised members a general meeting with up-to-date accounts in July. "It is now August and members still await this meeting as do the Town Council. "The Town Council has always had a representative who attended Chamber meetings." It was in the November 22 issue of the Crediton Courier that Mr Coryton defended Crediton Chamber of Commerce. He said that the Chamber was "as healthy as ever" and added: "Our fi nances are quite good and recently we have made a contribution to the fl ower displays in the town." He cited emails going to the wrong accounts for some of the unanswered emails sent by Crediton Town Council. He also spoke of the success the Chamber had had helping organise a book fair and launching a new website, the website paid for with some High Street Innovation funding accessed through Mid Devon District Council. He admitted then that the Chamber had done away with its regular meetings and said that it would be publishing an electronic magazine, twice a year, called the Crediton Shopper. He added that hard copies would be posted to addresses in the EX17 and EX3 postcode areas. It was a Freedom of Information request by the Courier to Crediton Town Council which revealed that a number of letters and emails had been sent to Crediton Chamber of Commerce, but no replies Continued on page 2
