THE annual Upton Pyne Flower Show was a tremendous success with many entries in all the classes.

These included flowers in unusual containers, scented sprays, flowering shubs, gardens on plates, crafts for children, foliage and shrubs, photographs, table centre arrangements, cactus, indoor flowering plants, outdoor flowering plants in containers, tulips, daffodils, rhododendrons, camellias and more, making wonderful displays in the village hall.

However, these were not judged by professional judges, but by the visitors, who put pennies in front of the exhibit that they liked the best. All winners received a plant as their prize, and the children received packets of seeds.

The only classes to be judged by a professional judge were the cookery classes. Victoria sponge winner was Joan Nethercott, and Adrienne won the savoury scones.

The cake and refreshment stall was run by Pam Stoneman, Roz Rowlerson and Pat Overton. There was also photographs on show, by local people.

The show secretary is Chris Grundy who says the show is only run once a year, as really a social occasion, which was true, as so many people were there.

There were many entries for the children’s painting competition and the winners were: 1 Dulcie Cann, 2 Melanie Jordan and 3 Ollie Morrish.

Chairman of the Garden Club, June Nicks, says that the club meets on the third Monday of each month from September to May, at 7.30pm, in the village hall.

During the summer months they have outings to places of interest.

Their next meeting will be held on Monday, May 15, when the speaker will be Emilie Savory from Coastal Organics at Clyst St Mary who will talk on how they recycle your garden waste.
