ARE you passionate about good food? Would you like to support people in your community to reduce food waste? Or perhaps you would like to create delicious meals for your community in a pop-up Food Surplus Café using surplus food from supermarkets, farms and the high street?
If so, you are invited to join Community Actions Groups Devon (CAG Devon) on Saturday, July 21, at the Boniface Centre in Crediton, for an interactive Love Food Hate Waste workshop.
Community Action Groups Devon (CAG Devon) is a project to reduce household waste by supporting communities to come together and share, mend, swap, reduce, re-use and recycle.
CAG Devon Project Assistant, Melissa Harvey explains: “The average UK household throws away around £540 of food and drink a year, most of which could have been eaten. We aren’t just looking for keen cooks, but also people with enthusiasm and organisational skills who would like to help people eat well and waste less or create fun and healthy community meals.”
The morning session will be run by Beth from Somerset Waste Partnership. Using activities from the Love Food Hate Waste campaign she will help participants understand the key reasons why people waste food in the home and provide lots of practical ideas and resources for supporting other people to waste less.
The afternoon will look at the steps needed to set up a pop-up community Food Surplus Cafe ; from sourcing and storing food, to recruiting volunteers, health and hygiene, publicity and all the things people need to consider to turn a mound of unwanted food into a free meal for the community. Sustainable Crediton Waste Action Group will be there to describe the Food Surplus Cafes that the group has trialled in Crediton.
CAG Devon is managed by Resource Futures and supported by Devon County Council.
