A LOCAL History Day was held at Crediton Library on Wednesday, October 10 as part of celebrating national Libraries Week and bringing communities together.

The fascinating talks spanned the ages from Anglo-Saxon times to the Second World War.

Dr Paul Cleave, honorary research fellow, University of Exeter, gave a talk about Crediton Holidays in the past, using diaries, old guide books, mementos and photos.

Tony Gale, from the Crediton & District U3A History Society, used photos and maps to describe the Anglo-Saxon Charter Boundaries of Crediton that he had walked and mapped for six months.

Keith Parsons and David Nation, from the Crediton Area History & Museum Society gave a talk on Crediton in World War One using lots of personal accounts.

David and Keith brought a display of World War One items from the museum.

Sandy Houghton from Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life brought artefacts, photographs and maps from the museum.

Mark Norman from Crediton Library described the Local History Resources and the Boniface Collection at the library.

Attendees then had a chance to explore and handle the resources and rare books.

There was also a range of exhibitors with displays for people to explore.

Brian Carpenter from the Devon Archives and Local Studies department took along a range of information leaflets on popular history topics and about the Archives and Local Studies resources.

Photographs of the characters of the Crediton and Fulda actors, who played them in the Anglo-German production "Echoes of Wartime" to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, were on display.

The day was enjoyed by all and plans are already being made for next year.

Crediton Library is one of 50 Devon Libraries run by the charity Libraries Unlimited.
