I WOULD like to add my voice to the fury and outrage at the high handedness of Mid Devon District Council in deciding to sell the Council Offices not to the town but to the highest bidder.
I lived in Crediton for 30 years and for much of that time was both a Town Councillor (serving one term as Mayor) and an adviser and subsequently Manager of the local Citizens Advice Bureau. I am therefore on two counts appalled at this decision.
The Council Offices not only provided accommodation for the Town Council, including the handsome Council Chamber, but also to various voluntary groups including the CAB.
It is an invaluable resource for the town, a focus for its civic pride and its recognition of the value of the work done by the voluntary sector.
Where will the Town Council be relocated?
It is not possible to imagine anywhere in the town as suitable, accessible and practical as the Council Offices.
Voluntary groups cannot afford high rents for office space.
I am still working as an adviser for the CAB here in Rugby and I know full well that life has become a lot more precarious and challenging for many people (especially since the introduction of Universal Credit) and for those who are desperate there is nowhere else to go for help apart from the CAB.
Thank you, Mid Devon councillors, for denying the people of Crediton the lifeline that so many of them need.
I hope it is not too late to reverse this unkind and ill thought-out decision.
