LAURA Conyngham has written the following letter to the Governors and Parochial Church Council at Crediton Parish Church regarding the Buller Memorial in Holy Cross Church.

It reads: "On stepping into a church or into a Quaker Meeting House, there is, for many of us, a sense of calm, prayerfulness and equality.

Whoever we are in the world outside, in this place we are equal before God. We come into this world with nothing and when we die, we leave with nothing.

Therefore, in Holy Cross I find it distracting to have a vast, intricate piece of Edwardian sculpture directly in front of worshippers with red lettering reading:

“To the Glory of God In Mem- ory of Redvers Buller.

This Memor- ial was given by his fellow count-rymen.”

Any name as large as this in the centre of a Parish Church is inappropriate.

I ask that the Governors of Holy Cross and the Parochial Church Council discuss whether the time has come to remove the red letters.
