I READ the letters on charging for parking on the High Street ("Crediton Courier", January 12). I have also lived in Crediton for many years, and over that time the High Street has changed, from free parking to the sort of shops we now have.
Charging for parking would be a disaster for the retailers, 45 minutes isn't very long if you have come in from the country and you have an appointment at the hair dressers, optician, solicitor, dentist etc. the minimum should be at least an hour.
Whoever came up with the idea of charging to park clearly wasn't thinking of the damage it would do to the Town.
No-one will come into the town unless you have an appointment, instead it will be straight to the supermarket where you can park for free, and when that happens it will be the end of the town and that will be on the heads of the person or persons who came up with that crazy idea.
I am very concerned with the way things are going, I feel this government is taking us backwards, we are being governed by the rich who have lost sight of what it's like to live in the real world.
You hear from local councillors to the MPs in London, saying they went into the job to make a difference to the people they serve.
When you hear these thoughtless comments being made from all levels it worries me.
I urge Devon County Council to seriously think again, before the damage is done.
If you feel the same, then add your comments/feelings to the letters page.
