FOLLOWING many complaints from residents and businesses about the untidy state of Crediton High Street, Mid Devon District councillors Bob Wright and Frank Letch have put pressure on the Mid Devon District Council street cleaning officer to “come clean” about the poor state of the town’s High Street and Town Square.
The MDDC officer, Stuart Noyce, kindly supplied the councillors with a litter picking and sweeping rota following their request to see how it was being monitored.
After discussions it was agreed that over the week the street cleaning team will litter pick the High Street daily and sweep daily one fifth of the High Street and Market Street, to include the Town Square.
Cllr Letch did point out to the officer that in his youth in London people cleaned in front of their houses weekly and shops in Stratford High Street were swept daily by the shop-keepers.
Cllr Wright added that when he first left school he worked in a shop on Crediton High Street and it was the first job every day to sweep outside the shop and again after lunch.
Cllr Letch also pointed out that most of the litter was caused by a few inconsiderate and lazy people throwing their rubbish down instead of putting it in a bin or taking it home.
