HAVING recently bought a cottage in Buller Square, Crediton, I should like to add my support to the excellent letters (Courier March 20) opposing the new "Western route" proposed for the relief road from the A377 to Lords Meadow.

If it got much further west the lorries would be following the same route as before - where's the relief in that?!

The Preferred Options exhibition on December 11 2008, showed us the Highways Authority Option and the Landowner's Option, which were being put forward for consultations.

In my opinion, neither was ideal but the Valley Route, my "Preferred Option", had already been discarded, even though it could have formed part of a future town bypass.

I resigned myself, therefore, to the fact that the town was going to get one of these two routes and that I shouldn't be a Nimby* if it was what the town needed.

It was therefore a huge shock to open the Courier (March 6) and read that Devon County Council had approved a completely different route, which councillors seemed to think was wonderful!

I hope that, having looked into the matter further, they will indeed reconsider their comments as suggested by your editor.

Without reiterating all the excellent points of the aforementioned letters, it was good to see that two were from residents of Dean Street and Fulda Crescent.

Let us hope that more people in the town will object to these crazy plans and not just leave it to those from Exeter Road, Tolleys, Buller Square, Mannings and Mill Street.

*(Not actually a noun in the Oxford English Dictionary - the acronym from "not in my back yard").
