MORCHARD Bishop Vintage Rally and Family Fun Day was held in the village playing field on a lovely day with a breeze, sunshine to begin with, and was attended by lots of people who found plenty of interest to look at or buy.

There were a good number of old cars, motorcycles, tractors and stationary engines, several tables of bygones, kitchen utensils many no longer used and implements such as saws and things from the tool shed.

The event, on Saturday, August 3, was opened by Hazel Evely, the Crediton Morrisons Community Champion. She told the crowd she had grown up at Morchard and felt very honoured to have been asked to be the opener.

The line up of cars included two Austin Sevens right up to the 2018 Marlin Cabrio of Keith Davies of Morchard Bishop.

Tractors dated from at least 1945 with Michael Coleman’s historic Farmall H from Coleford. Michael, like many of the exhibitors, is a member of Mid Devon Tractor Engine and Machinery Group.

Among several motorcycles were two from Bob Robinson of Morchard Bishop, Rally chairman.

There was music, including Morchard’s Community Rock Choir, adults and children’s races, an egg throwing competition, ferret racing, various games and sideshows including the charming roundabout from 1960 owned by Phil Vanstone from Bideford.

Fascinating the children, and a number of adults were the sheep, donkeys and poultry from Lindfield Day Opportunities at Morchard, a smallholding set up in 2004. It provides private day care as a resource for people who have learning, physical or mental disabilities, so all the animals were quite used to having people around and being handled.

Once again, Ray Gilbert of Crediton had lent his miniature railway this year being pulled by a small-scale copy of the 1000 Class locomotive Western Buccaneer that would have done the Penzance - Paddington run.

It was being driven by retired main line engine driver Martin Shelley who lives in Morchard.

There were Best In Class rosettes for each category and exhibitors received brass plaques.
