LAST Saturday I was in Crediton Town Square leafletting for the Labour Party, something I had also done in November. It was good to get an increasingly positive response and I felt that people were now realising the damage the Tories and Lib Dems have done to our society, and the need to remove them from power if we are to stop our NHS and welfare state being completely destroyed. The over-whelmingly right-wing national press makes it difficult to realise that things are getting worse, not better. So far we have only had half the intended cuts, and once complete it will become even more clear to people what the present Government has done. Perhaps one of the most conspicuous results of the Coalition cuts must surely be the proliferation of food banks. Supermarkets are now putting boxes at their doors so that customers may give food to the hungry. Who could have predicted in 2010 that five years later there are many who are hungry in Central Devon, not somewhere one would think of as a deprived area. Meanwhile, we are experiencing large-scale tax avoidance, both by individuals and multi-national corporations, that dwarfs that of benefit fraud. While both should be condemned, we should get the issue in perspective! Although the odds may be stacked against us, we need to get our excellent candidate, Lynne Richards, elected. It is essential that we vote for her to help preserve our vital services, as well as showing our common-sense and compassion. When the winner is announced, the proportions voting for each party should reflect the strength of our opposition to the destructive policies of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat party's.
