MEMBERS of staff and children from Hayward’s Primary School in Crediton took part in activities to commemorate VE Day.
The day started with some members of staff and children meeting at Crediton Railway Station, dressed up in clothing of the era and many carrying gas mask boxes and small suitcases ready for a mock evacuation.
Other activities the children took part in were an air raid practice, writing postcards "home", making ration-recipe cakes, Charleston dance lessons, and a VE Day lunch of Homity Pie.
In the afternoon the parents went to the school at 2pm to view an exhibition the children created of their work from the term.
There was a vintage tea room with real china (tea served by pupils) and they had a visit from a World War Two USA Army Jeep.
Parents left comments in the visitors book which included: A great event, very interesting indeed. The children all looked very authentic - What an excellent display of children’s activities - Very impressive and lovely tea and cake - You all worked so hard. It’s amazing! - The children and staff have done a fantastic job, so much hard work put in.
