MORE than half the trophies to be won at this year’s Village Show organised by Cheriton Bishop Gardening Club were won by one gardener.

Local children proved themselves to be green fingered too. Among all the primary school and playgroup children who picked up the challenge to see how much they could get one seed potato to produce, Connie Brook won the prize for the heaviest crop with 1,839 gms (4 lbs) and Ella Yeo grew the heaviest potato with a 224 gm spud, within a fraction of half a pound.

Stephen Reed was the gardener who put so many trophies in his basket. He won the cups for most points in the flower, vegetable and fruit classes and for handicraft, a total of nine trophies.

Kath Eley took the Ladies Cup for gaining most points in the cookery section, Robyn Wells took the Checkers Cup for the best exhibit in cookery, an afternoon tea.

The Floral Art Cup was won by Molly Hutchins while Ann Smith won the Novice Cup and the Joker’s Cup.

In the Junior classes, Evie Jeffery won the Junior Cup, which she had previously won at the last show in 2019. Jessica Burton won the Senior Cup for those aged 12-14.

Trophies were presented by Dennis Milton who was a member of Cheriton Bishop Parish Council for six years, chairman for two of them.

The Gardening Club chairman, Sally Burton, said the standard of exhibits had been “outstanding” but entries were down, which had not surprised anyone. “We were surprised to have so many and such good exhibits,” she said.

This was the first show the Gardening Club has been able to hold since 2019.
