ONE of the boards of graffiti art which adorned the toilet block in Newcombes Meadow, Crediton, has been ripped off and is currently placed behind a bench in the park.
The board, one of many created at community youth graffiti workshops run by Crediton Town Council Youth Services, was discovered behind the bench on Saturday, September 12.
Young people created the boards and a mural on a wall in the park with modern muralist and graffiti art tutor Nick Halahan of Olas Art.
The toilet block, which has one multi-use accessible toilet available for public use from 9am to 4pm each day, is owned and managed by Crediton Town Council.
It has owned the toilet block since 2018 and has previously been investigating renovation ideas among other uses for the vicinity.
Newcombes Meadow is owned by Mid Devon District Council and Crediton Town Council has previously indicated that it would like to acquire it, however, the delay of Local Government Reorganisation may have delayed this further, like so many other initiatives involving councils.
In 2025 Crediton Heart Project announced plans to develop a community arts venue, The Park House, on the edge of Newcombes Meadow at the site of the toilet block and surrounding area.
The Heart Project says it would provide a welcoming and inclusive place to meet, learn and create together in the heart of our town.
The Park House would include a flexible performance space, with seating for 300, rooms for other community activities and a beautiful café opening onto the park.
It said when it announced its plan: “Built on the site of the dilapidated Union Road toilet block, between the War Memorial and Bike Shed, the Park House could offer amazing opportunities for local and national performance groups and bring many more events to our area, including theatre, cinema, dance, comedy and live music.”
