THE Sunnymead Gas-Up held at Thorverton on Sunday, May 7 attracted a record number of exhibitors and visitors.
This was the 16th year that the annual event had been held and the hosts, the Lee family in collaboration with local enthusiast groups, would like to thank all those that supported the event.
This year’s event had a special theme - a celebration of 100 years of Ford and Fordson tractors - recognising that 1917 was the first year of production of the Fordson model “F” tractor.
A 1918 Fordson tractor on steel wheels took pride of place at the show and this was complemented by numerous examples of the different models produced over the years.
A total of 55 tractors were exhibited at the event, with about 25 representing to the Ford and Fordson family.
In addition to the tractors, there was a good turnout of stationary engines, motorbikes and vintage and classic cars. New exhibits to the show included a large Ruston and Hornsby engine exhibited on the back of a former Green Goddess fire engine belonging to an enthusiast from Lympstone and a Ford Model “T” car from Sampford Courtenay.
The visit of a large group of well turned out motorbikes to the show around lunchtime provided an added attraction.
The fine weather encouraged strong demand for the Hocking’s Ice Cream, a new feature of the show along with live music from Lenny and Lime.
A number of stalls, skittles, a children’s bouncy castle and a wood sawing demonstration provided further attractions. As usual, the refreshments served in the barn by a dedicated team of helpers were a welcome feature of the event.
The organisers are delighted to report that a total of just over £2,000 was raised and this will be split between the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and Thorverton Surgery.
The date for next year’s event has been set for Sunday, May 6.
