SHOPPERS in Crediton are avoiding swarms of black flying ants along the high street.

During Flying Ant Day swarms of ants come out for a few days during the summer when weather conditions are hot and humid like today.

Flying Ant Day is believed to have started on July 8 and has spread across the country. It is when males and new queens leave the nest to mate and begin new colonies.

The black flying ants are thought to be harmless and will generally fly off within a few hours.
