MEMBERS of Crediton Flower Club were delighted to welcome back Jenny Dellow from Braunton for their April meeting.
Jenny began her long career in floristry and horticulture at the Constance Spry School in London and her chosen theme this time was “Floral Inspirations”.
The first arrangement was in a pale green container which she had decorated with her own hand-made woollen flowers in colours to compliment the flower choices - lilac lizianthus, soft pink carnations and deep cerise tulips.
The final result was highlighted with gypsophila and co-ordinating woollen bamboo canes to achieve a delightfully pastel design.
A boat-shaped basket came next filled with euonymus foliage and to enhance the nautical theme Jenny had skilfully made three upright “sails” from copper wire, ribbons and sisal.
Her design included beautiful white pieris flowers to suggest coral, lovely white roses and appropriately named sea holly. Cleverly made “sea anemones” and white melanosis orchids were the finishing touch.
In line with current trends away from the use of oasis the next arrangement comprised two matching placements in containers with chicken wire used as the means of supporting the plant material.
This look back at the 1960’s and early years of flower arranging demonstrated the very successful use of Tom Thumb pittosporum and purple hebe with deep purple lizianthus and statice, then beautifully contrasting lime green chrysanthemum blooms and white spray carnations.
The two arrangements were “linked” together with deep purple medolino sticks.
The next inspiration took the form of a tall wire cone-shaped container supporting a cleverly designed metal wreath ring.
This had been decorated with beads and was placed beneath an oasis ring in which Jenny expertly arranged euonymus foliage again, together with choisya “Sundance” and an autumnally coloured flower choice of yellow gerberas, yellow/red roses, solidago, yellow tulips and a finishing touch of sprays of bear grass.
The completed picture was a delightful combination of different shapes, textures and form.
For her finale a large flat dish in stainless steel was chosen as the basis of a very attractive display of large fatsia leaves, upright phormium, aspidistra and conifer.
She then created a beautiful Spring-like display of white longi lilies, blue iris, yellow tulips and wax flower - a delightful reminder of the Easter season.
Club secretary, June Harry, thanked Jenny for a demonstration which had certainly been full of inspiration for everyone.
The Club’s next meeting will be on Thursday, May 9 at 7.15pm at the Boniface Centre and will be a demonstration by Christine Harrington entitled “In an English Country Garden”.
New members and visitors are always welcome - any enquiries, please contact chairman, Gay Mullins, on 01363 774791.
