NEWTON St Cyres Young Farmers’ Club has had a busy year raising £1,760.40 for five different charities - Farms for City Children, Sandford Parish Hall, Crediton Foodbank, Balloons and Devon Air Ambulance Trust.
The club worked hard to organise numerous events to raise this money, including a dung sale, a re-run of its pantomime performance “Little Miss Hood”, a ducking stall at Quicke’s Open Farm Sunday, raffles, a cider and pasty quiz night and two discos.
The money was presented to the various charities at their annual harvest supper held at Thorverton Village Hall in October.
Here, members, advisory and guests congregated to enjoy a delicious bring and share meal, before hearing how their donations would make a difference to each of the charities they had supported.
Since October, the club has had an action-packed programme, with Okehampton and Hatherleigh carnivals being their main focus.
A float was designed and decorated by the members to resemble a scene from the Wild West. All the members that took part had a great time, with the float being awarded third prize at Okehampton Carnival.
More recently, the club celebrated its 81st year with a dinner and dance which was held at the Waie Inn, Zeal Monachorum with guest speaker, Barny Butterfield from Sandford Orchards.
It was a wonderful atmosphere with more than 160 people attending the three-course meal. The club leaders, Angie Prouse and Claire Heaven-Roberts, awarded members with trophies for their accomplishments over the year.
Newton St Cyres Young Farmers’ Club has lots planned to look forward to over the next few months. If you would like to get involved, please go along to the next meeting on Tuesday, December 4 at 8pm in Newton St Cyres Parish Hall Hall.
