THIS year will mark the centenary of the formation of Crediton United Football Club - and a series of events is being planned to celebrate the occasion.
Although there are records of soccer being played in the town before 1910 (namely with the Crediton Wanderers and Crediton Grammar School recorded as playing each other as early as 1888) it was not until 1910 that Crediton United Association Football Club was formed.
It was agreed at a meeting on September 10, 1910, at the Cyclist Drill Hall.
The first match, as members of the East Devon League, was played the following Saturday, September 17, against Southernhay at Spence's Meadow, Crediton.
Long-serving Crediton United AFC member, Chris Gillard, told the Courier: "No-one seems to be able to identify where this was but as early football in the town was indebted to the goodwill and co-operation of Crediton Rugby Club, then it is possible that this could have been on ground used with them.
"Early team photographs show the unmistakable outline of Gamlens on Exhibition Road in the background so it could have been that Spence's Meadow was the original name of the Recreation field where it appears the photos were taken."
Mr Gillard said that among the anniversary events being planned is a Sportsmen's Evening, various players reunion events and matches.
He said he hoped events would involve the youth section and their families.
Mr Gillard said more details will be available in the coming weeks and months.
As a part of the celebrations Chris is planning to produce a DVD for sale of photographs from the collection of football photos he has accumulated over the past 40 years.
He has a collection of several hundred photos, most of which are from the past 30 years.
He has many photos of the 1950's and also some which go back as far as 1910.
If anyone else has photographs from this period that Chris could include in his DVD, he would be grateful if the pictures could be left at the Crediton Courier office, with the owner's name and address and names of people in the photos (if possible).
He says the pictures will then be copied and returned promptly.
