A J Cox Butchers launch their new steak pasty today

A NEW steak pasty is launched today (February 26) by a Crediton butchers.

This is no ordinary pasty!

Steve Nicholls, co-owner of Cox Butchers, has spent a lifetime making and tasting pasties from all over Cornwall in his quest to perfect a homemade pasty he would be proud to produce.

From his early life growing up in West Cornwall, pasties were an integral part of life. “We would take pasties on family trips to the beach wrapped in tea towels. When I started work we always had a pasty for crib (a Cornish term for morning or lunch break) on Fridays. I would have to go up the back stairs of the local bakers and buy them fresh from the oven.

“Untold passion and knowledge has gone into developing the pasty which will be made in the shop kitchen using beef supplied by Sandford farmer, Jim Stephens, and locally sourced vegetables. There are no preservatives or additives used.

“We have made and tested a lot of pasties to get to what I believe is as good as my mothers.

“Our pasties will contain chuck steak, potato, turnip (Cornish for swede!), onion with plenty of pepper and a little salt and a secret ingredient of my mothers.

“We have had fun getting the pastry just right – not too short and trying not to roll it too thick, which can affect the crimping.

“Our pasties will be hand crimped on the side in the traditional Cornish way.

“A lot of love and care has gone into the making of these pasties.”

“This is good honest food at its best - They’re as good as any pasty in Cornwall.”

The pasties will be baked in batches and will be available from 10am each day at A J Cox Butchers, at 16 High Street.
