AS MUCH AS £10 million could go towards fixing Devon’s roads if the county council’s cabinet agrees to earmark the sum next month.

The money was freed up after the government gave Devon County Council a better settlement than expected last month to help it tackle its overspend on education for children with special educational needs and disabilities.

The £10 million would mostly be spent on “extensive” pothole-patching, as well as drainage improvements and repainting road markings. It would boost the council’s total highway maintenance budget for this year to over £72 million.

A Devon County Council spokesperson said: “The extremely wet weather over the past year has inflicted a huge amount of damage on our roads so this proposed funding is very much needed and will help prevent further decline in its condition.”

Devon County Council’s cabinet will decide whether to ringfence the extra cash on Wednesday, May 8.
