FROM Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5, there will be community celebrations in the town organised by a team from Crediton Town Council, the Crediton Town Team and the Crediton Arts Centre.

The events will mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee as well as Devon Day and St Boniface Day.

The final day, of June 5, will finish with a big outdoor Sunday Lunch in the Town Square and this will include entertainment and live music.

The events are being supported with grants from Mid Devon District Council’s “Love Your Town Centre” fund, Devon County Council’s Locality Fund, and the Town Council itself, with numerous groups and people giving their time voluntarily to create the events.

A separate and hard-won National Lottery Awards for All grant to the Town Team will enable many high street flags to be repaired as well as new ones to be designed and made in time for the Jubilee.

The Government has moved nearby Bank Holidays to create the continuous four-day National Holiday to honour the Queen’s extraordinary 70-year reign.

Details, so far, of the town’s events include the lighting of a fire beacon at Beacon Park to link with others up and down the country, a programme of daytime entertainment in Newcombes Meadow on Saturday, June 4, called “Party in the Park”, followed by a free-of-charge “Movie in the Park”.

There will also be guided tours of the town’s Boniface Heritage Trail stained glass windows which will include actors playing medieval characters, the transformation in the Town Square on the Sunday morning of a fir tree into a Christmas tree to mark our local St Boniface’s extraordinary life (and claim that all Christmas trees originally came from Crediton!).

Other events include a big Tug of War competition between teams from the town and from the Crediton Hamlets, and a Big Sunday Lunch, with lots of extra tables and chairs brought in to the square and to which people can either take their own food and drinks, or buy from the surrounding restaurants and pubs, or from the different street food sellers who’ll be attending.

Live music will be played by the Crediton Youth Orchestra, the “Beatles” tribute band “The Beatnxs”, the well-known folk singer Jim Causley, the all-female local choir “The Decibelles”, and the Sandford Sings choir.

More details will appear during coming weeks and on the websites of the Town Council, Town Team and Crediton Arts Centre.

In the meantime… June 2, 3, 4 and 5... Save the Dates!
