THE always-popular Crediton Library Local History Day is back again this year.

On Wednesday, July 16, between 9.30am and 3.30pm, you will be able to enjoy a range of talks and information stands relating to local history and heritage. Refreshments will be available.

Tickets for the talks cost just £2 each, or £5 for all-day access.

If possible, book in advance at the library, by emailing [email protected] or by telephoning 01363 772578.

The programme of talks this year is as follows:

At 9.30am, Dr Bridget Gillard of the Devonshire Association will speak about Mother Teresa and the founding of the Posbury St Francis Community.

At 10.45am, volunteer Irene Andrews will give a talk about the Devon and Cornwall Police Museum and the history of local policing. There will be some artefacts to examine.

At 1pm, author Graham Ley will speak on the subject of researching and writing a Devon historical saga. He will discuss the types of research he undertook whilst writing locally-based fiction.

At 2.15pm, Brian Carpenter of the South West Heritage Trust will give a talk entitled “Fire, Theft, Dung and Disorderly Houses”. He will discuss Crediton in the 18th century, as we know it from the records of the Devon Quarter Sessions Courts, which are held at the Records Office.

There will also be information stands from the Devon Family History Society, who will offer advice on researching your family, Crediton Museum, The Folklore Library and Archive, who will have artefacts on display from their collections and the Crediton Library Reminiscence Project, who will be able to chat about ways in which you can record your memories about the Crediton area, to help to shine a light on this part of Mid Devon for future generations.
