AFTER losing her son, Sally Foot, who lives near Crediton, decided to fundraise for a new classroom at Ak’Tenamit school in Guatemala where he had volunteered.
Sally is hoping to raise £10,000 for Ak’t Tenamit which is situated in Eastern Guatemala in Rio Dulce, a rural area in the rain forest with the only access being by boat.
The school caters for about 600 disadvantaged children providing an education for both boys and girls, especially promoting an education for girls.
The school runs a restaurant and a hotel in nearby Livingston where students are trained in the hospitality industry.
It also runs a rural health clinic for the local community and inspires the students in areas of sustainability and the environment.
The school has also taken part in the UN International Climate Change Conference.
Sally’s son Alexander Foot, who died in 2020, had previously volunteered at the school and was planning to return there when he died.
In his memory, Sally would like to raise the money to build a classroom in his name, as a lasting legacy.
