CHILDREN and their families at Hayward’s Primary School, Crediton have been taking part in an exciting project, Nayamba’s 100 Heroes.

Mrs Dixon, a teacher at the school, launched the project during a recent assembly introducing the children to an exciting range of fundraising events.

Up until now the school has not had any official links with children in another country and this will be an opportunity for Hayward’s children to learn about the similarities and differences between their lives and those of the children at Nayamba School in Zambia.

A Hero Day was held at the school on Wednesday 25 and the children made bookmarks, badges, created artworks and written postcards to be taken to Zambia when Mrs Dixon visits the country on June 5, with seven other teachers from the Exeter area to help teach English and reading for one week.

She will also take notebooks, pencils and crayons that have been donated by Haywards families. As well as four giant boxes of books, frisbees, skipping ropes and models of skeletons. The PTA donated the funds from one of their cake sales, which was fund-matched making a total of more than £300.

Kizzie and Ayisha Coumbia and Ella Creda raised a minimum of £50 as individuals in the campaign. Hayward’s will be given a plaque in the new classroom at Nayamba School and the girls names will be on the plaque to recognise their individual contribution.

The project aims to build an extra four classrooms and a pre-school this year.

During a visit to Nayamba School in September 2015 volunteers completed the latest renovations in the three existing classrooms which have been renovated.

When volunteers from the project first became involved with Nayamba School, the classrooms were in one large, bare breeze-block building. Over the years, the building has been bricked up, cemented and plastered, dividing it in to three distinct classrooms.

Teachers were travelling ridiculous distances each day in order to work at the school. All this travelling was impacting on their time in class. So, the project raised sufficient funds to build three basic, brick-built houses on the actual school site, for the teachers, and their families, to live in.

Funds have also been used to provide each child with a hot nutritious meal of enriched porridge each day. More funding is required to keep this provision going.
