POLICE are asking the public to be vigilant after a lone female was flagged down by two men impersonating police officers in an unmarked vehicle.
The incident took place on the A386 at the Old Beam Quarry Site, Torrington, between 10.50pm and 11pm on Monday, September 12.
A 32-year-old woman was driving along the A386 heading to Torrington from Bideford.
She was flagged down by a vehicle behind her with a blue flashing light on the roof of the car and blue lights on the front grill.
Once she had pulled over, two men got out of the car and approached the woman’s vehicle.
One of the men then tried opening her car door, which was locked, and shouted at her to get out. Sensing danger, the woman drove off.
Their car was described as dark/black with blue lights in the grill at the front of the car.
The two men were wearing black hoody’s and both wore a scarf concealing their faces. They also had deep voices, with no accent.
A police spokesperson said: “If this happens to you, and you have reason to believe is not a genuine police car, do not stop, but when able, call 999.
“Impersonating a police officer is a criminal offence. A genuine police officer will always take the time to reassure you of their identity. Always ask for their shoulder number which is unique to each officer, ask to see ID and call the police to confirm the officers identity if you are at all unsure or have any concerns.
“Incidents such as these are rare, but if you believe you have been approached by somebody who is impersonating a police officer, please call 999.”
