REFERENCE the article on Mid Devon District Council cracking down on litter and smoking (Courier, June 7). Some of the more ignorant members of society think they are above the law.
The selfish taxi driver concerned was stung for a total of £461 for smoking in his taxi, never mind the poor passenger and the smell in the vehicle.
We visited the RD and E hospital a few days ago and walked to reception past another taxi driver who was parked in a no waiting area (plenty of vacant spaces) and puffing away on a cigarette.
Nearby was a sign, saying no smoking in the hospital premises. I informed security, who dealt with him.
Regarding mobile phones, we arranged for a taxi from Crediton a couple of years ago to collect us from Exeter airport. The drivers' mobile rang and he answered it as he was approaching the roundabout near the Met office.
We wobbled onto the roundabout and in order to turn he had to let go of the steering wheel to change gear and held the wheel with his knee.
I saw another of the firm's vehicles, driven by a woman driver, again using her mobile oblivious to other vehicles, passing the Wellparks roundabout outside Tesco.
Their crass ignorance is not limited to mobile antics. I've seen their vehicles outside the White Swan, parked on double yellow lines, many times where the road signs say "no loading at any time."
MDDC ought to get tough with them. The rules of the road apply to all. Let's hope more get "stung" or put off the road for good. The traffic warden should be here permanently.
The council, despite giving themselves a 23 per cent rise can't seem to do anything about it.
