A PROJECT to install drainage along the entire length of the north side of Crediton Parish Church which will include some improvements to the cobbled path will begin on Monday, July 18.
Work on the Grade I listed building is expected to last around six - eight weeks.
Bill Jerman explained: "The current lack of drainage has been causing some progressive structural movement the worst area being the east end of the Lady Chapel."
He added: "Where water coming off the large roof areas has been discharging in concentrated form across the cobbles it has, over time, seriously eroded the north side path causing both subsidence and cracking.
"Once completed the drainage scheme will cope effectively with all but the most extreme water flow from the rain water pipes and will reduce to a minimal level of risk water ponding around the building.
"The removal of water across the cobbles will dramatically reduce the erosion rate and deterioration of the cobbles.
"Water removal from the ground immediately around the building will reduce tendencies to seasonal and progressive structural movement as a result of waterlogged ground conditions.
"The repair of the cobbles along the north side will be a substantial benefit in the conservation of the historic fabric of the church and the churchyard."
He continued: "While the work is taking place visitors to the churchyard should be aware that the north side path area will be closed and those wishing to cross the churchyard should use the access to the west and south sides of the church.
