PEOPLE in Crediton were treated to double the music when Crediton Town Band played on the Saturday morning before Christmas.

One section of the band delighted shoppers on the High Street for two hours while another, led by their MD Johnny Glanfield, played in the foyer of the Tesco store on the Exeter road.

It was a special day for horn player Johnny because it was his 85th birthday. Other senior members of the Band playing that day included Brian Cope (horn) and John Pike (bass). Another is Peter Cripps from North Tawton who was not with them on Saturday.

Band chairman is Roger Rottenbury whose son, Mark, is principal cornet and one the younger members of the band with them on Saturday. More younger players would be welcomed.

Some of the current members of the Band were in the original Town Band before there was a break and today’s band was formed more than 30 years ago.

Heads turned when people noticed Vanessa Lapchuk playing her purple plastic trombone, a PBone, a birthday present from her family this summer.

Vanessa said it is much lighter than the brass trombone which needs to be made up each time it is used. This one can be left where Vanessa rehearses at home.

She added that because it is so much lighter than a brass or silver instrument it is good for children to learn on. She understands that plastic trumpets are also available.

‘I don’t play the PBone when I am marching or in concerts but it is easier to carry when we are playing such as on the High Street,” she said.

To know more about the band, please contact the conductor, Chris Richards on 01363 775987. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays 7.30-9.30pm at the Hayward’s School.
