By Mrs Margaret Squires
Mid Devon District and Devon County Councillor
I HAVE recently been given the Outside Body representation on CHAT by Mid Devon District Council.
CHAT says: “CHAT has been helping people in Mid Devon since 1995. We believe everyone is entitled to decent, secure and affordable housing – a place to call home.”
CHAT (Churches Housing Action Team) was founded 25 years ago. It is Tiverton-based at Coggan’s Well House, Tiverton EX16 6LU - but works right across Mid Devon.
Advisors are available in Crediton a couple of days a week to help those who need it.
The advisors offer housing support to those that need it including those suffering domestic abuse, ex-offenders, those that are drug dependent and rough sleepers, also helping those facing eviction, sofa surfing or living in tents. They will help to obtain access to housing through local authority or by private rent.
CHAT also offer tenancy support with the aim being to help vulnerable tenants to continue to live where they are and create a positive relationship with their landlords. Helping to set up regular rent payments and helping with minor repairs where needed.
CHAT has a debt and money advice service helping those struggling to clear debt helping review benefits and manage finance.
The foodbanks in Tiverton and Cullompton are run by CHAT, also running a service to people in the Crediton area.
It says that the amount needing help has increased dramatically because of the pandemic. Administration has been difficult because of working from home. The team is now back working in Coggan’s Well House, socially distanced.
CHAT keep a store of equipment for those that may need it. It includes bedding, clothes, and tents. It obviously needs funding and regular donations are welcome. Jackie, Bishop of Crediton is the Patron.
For those who need help CHAT can be contacted, Monday to Friday, from 9.30am to 4.30pm, by calling 0800 059 0104 or email: [email protected] .
