THE boss of a local charity swapped his suit for trainers and stopped off in Crediton as part of a 200 mile run, to help raise awareness of the organisation.
Dominic Spayne, CEO at Shared Lives South West (SLSW) has already raised £1,000 for the charity with the run.
He started the challenge in Barnstaple where he was waved off by numerous carers who met for breakfast.
Dominic then ran 40 miles to Crediton where he met a group of local SWSW carers and people who are supported by the organisation, for a picnic in Newcombes Meadow.
The carer’s gathered to cheer him on, have a chat and there was even music and a sing along.
He aims to end the week in Penzance to help spread the word about the work the award winning charity does and to celebrate national Shared Lives Week (June 17-21).
Dominic explained: “I have done many marathons, but running that distance on the first day was a lot harder than I thought it would be.
“It lifted my spirits to see the carer’s in Crediton near the end of the day.
“It was lovely that they came to support me.
“We got lucky with the weather and the park was a lovely open space for everyone to come together.”
It’s a double celebration as SLSW is also celebrating its 15th anniversary and is thriving, due to the unique model of care it offers.
The charity currently supports more than 400 adults with additional needs and matches them with a carer.
Carers open their family home to the person in need of support; it’s like fostering for adults.
SLSW supports people with a learning disability, mental health issues and illnesses relating to older age including dementia and it has recently been awarded an “Outstanding” rating by the Care Quality Commission.
During his week-long run Dominic will visit Shared Lives families who are hosting various events to cheer him along.
The week culminates with a barbecue, music and celebration at a SLSW carer’s family home in Penzance on June 21.
