EVEN though there were fewer flower and vegetable entries this year because of the weather, entries were good at Cheriton Bishop Village Show, organised by the village Gardening Club.

Among them were a number of geraniums grown from a plant plug given to Gardening Club members earlier this year, a bucket of home-grown compost or a spectacular weed as well as all the more usual classes for vegetables, flowers, cookery and more.

This year the Reed family did well with trophies won by two generations. Peggy Reed won the challenge cup for gaining most points in the senior section. Last year’s winner, Nick Vaughan, was runner-up.

Peggy also won the flower cup but Nick won the Vegetable cup this year with Peggy as runner-up.

The Wilf Rice Fruit Bowl was won by Peggy. Sally Burton won the Checkers Cup for the best exhibit in the cookery classes with her Victoria sponge. Chandler Reed won the Novice cup. Peggy had been runner-up for three more trophies.

Gardening Club secretary Janet Jeffery won the Floral Art cup and the Pett cup for gaining most points in the floral art and handicraft sections, Peggy was runner-up each time.

Kath Eley won the Handicraft trophy with four people being runners-up with only one point putting Kath ahead. Alan Greenslade won the Joker’s Cup and again there were four runners-up.

In the children’s classes the Junior cup for most points in the eight-to-11 year-olds went to William Jeffery with Izzy Macleod runner-up.

The Charlotte cup for most points in the five-to-seven years classes was shared by Emily Jeffery and William Otley with Tom Macleod runner-up.

The show was opened by Col Geoffrey Sharland, one of the club’s vice presidents and who, with his late wife Marjorie, has been connected with the club and show for more than 30 years in various ways.
