THE story "Decline of local newspapers a danger to our democracy" appeared March 23 issue 1182.

Theresa May has launched a review into whether state intervention is needed to preserve local newspapers.

The review will look at how to ensure the continuation of high-quality journalism and will look at the causes of fake news.

In a recent speech she said that the disappearance of hundreds of local titles was “dangerous for our democracy.”

She explained: “Good journalism provides us with the information and analysis we need to inform our viewpoints and conduct a genuine discussion – it is a huge force for good.”

“A free press is one of the foundations on which our democracy is built and it must be preserved.”

What you told us ...

The Courier is the best local newspaper, it’s got the lot and it’s the only one I read. I think this column’s good too. I think the paper could be thicker and include even more local news. A lot of people read it. It lets you know what’s going on. A lot of papers only focus on bad news but the Courier also includes good news. I read every page.

Shop Keeper, Crediton

I like the Courier because it tells you what’s going on in the local area. There’s always lots of news.

Bow Resident

I think there is a future for local papers. It lets you know what’s going in in the local community.

Arthur Manning, Crediton

I think there is a need for local newspapers and a future for the Courier.

Margaret Enderson, Coleford

I think there is a future for the Courier. I read it every week. I like to read the local news. Crediton has a good community where everyone knows everyone else and is keen to help when there is a need. I hope that this will continue.

Patrick Collier, Crediton

I think it’s desperate that some local newspapers are closing. I rely on the Courier for very local news and local events. I like to read the paper, I couldn’t read it online.
