A CREDITON man who is incensed that Devon County Council has not been collecting abandoned road signs many weeks after they have been used has begun collecting them and returning them to the DCC depot at Fordton.

Dave Blanchford explained: "I’m cross about it.

"Why don’t Devon County Council pick up the road signs after they have finished with them?

"Near my home there were diversion signs left along the road well after the works had been finished. It is a waste of money and the signs left behind completely fool Joe Public, especially those from away.

"I have also picked up anti-skid signs left behind in the town about seven weeks after the chippings were put down. Just leaving the signs behind is a total waste of money, one which we, the ratepayers, are paying for."

Mr Blanchford said that all the abandoned signs were made of heavy metal, quite heavy for him to load into his car.

"The metal ones are dearer to make than plastic ones, it seems very wasteful.

"You wouldn’t leave a chainsaw lying around so why do they leave metal signs lying around?"

Mr Blanchford said he was "taking a stand" and would continue collecting abandoned signs and delivering them to the county council Crediton depot.
