THE August Open Meeting of the Crediton U3A Group was very well attended (more than 100 members and non-members) which included an interesting, well-illustrated talk by Jenny Bennett entitled “The River Exe and its recent Geological History”.

Jenny, who used to work at Exeter University, explained the geology of the River Exe with particular focus on the areas around Brampford Speke and Exeter.

The audience also learnt about the river changing course over time and the “pinch point” at Cowley Bridge that causes so many flooding problems!

The next Open Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 19 and will include a talk by Professor Ian Barclay entitled “Why did they invent that?”

The following meeting, on October 17 will see Dr Todd Gray give a talk on “The rise and fall of Mosley’s Blackshirts in Crediton and Devon”.

The groups (which meet either weekly or monthly) include the following: Astrology, Tai Chi, French, Mindfulness, Arts and Crafts, Historical Buildings and Churches Visiting group, Walking, Science, Wildlife Walks, Pub Lunches, Spanish, Photography, Creative Writing, History and Singing – a full list of groups and how to join in is included on the website: U3asites.org.uk/crediton .

It’s not just about interest groups, however, trips and other events are also organised for members - there is now an “embryonic” idea about a three-day trip to Wiltshire by coach being planned for next May/June…we shall have to see how this develops.

There are also dances – a Ceilidh is to be held in Sandford Parish Hall on October 13. Thinking ahead to the approaching festive season, the Christmas Lunch is arranged for Wednesday, December 19.

An organisation such as this needs a committee. If you would like to join the team working “behind the scenes” we would welcome you – please come along to a Committee Meeting to see what goes on and how you can help.
