IN October ideas on how to deal with traffic on Crediton High Street will be put to Crediton Town Council to see what might be done to help traffic and pedestrian flow as well as air quality.
At the council’s Town Strategy Committee meeting this month Mr Jon Tricker from Phil Jones Associates of Exeter showed the results of a survey of the town centre on June 13.
This had been done in two periods of three hours, one in the morning, one in the afternoon.
It used 15 “quite discreet” cameras with automatic registration plate recognition to see how many through vehicles, how many were “local” and what sort of vehicle, energy types, as well as where pedestrians crossed the road.
Bus stops were looked at, how long buses waited and traffic build-up. One of the main problems was vehicles idling while held up.
There would be temporary aid quality monitors at places in the town. When he said that vehicles could wait for at least a minute at the traffic lights at St Lawrence Green, Jon was told the new ones had improved matters.
One idea was for a mini roundabout there with two Pelican crossings.
He said not much could be done to improve the bus stop on The Green because this was heritage land.
He added that a whole series of improvements were planned which could improve delays and air quality.
He intended to return to the committee’s October meeting with plans, hoping to create better movement for vehicles and cyclists.
He agreed with councillors when he said that if traffic was increased year-on-year in Crediton, problems would get worse and there would be other problems too.
