A FLAG-raising ceremony in support of Armed Forces Day took place at the Council offices, Market Street, Crediton, this morning, Monday, June 19.

Armed Forces Day takes place on Saturday, June 24 and is a day when the whole nation is invited to show support for our military community, both serving and retired, at home and abroad.

Crediton Town Council flies the Armed Forces flag for the duration of the week leading up to Armed Forces Day, from the Council offices, by kind permission of Mid Devon District Council and with the support of the Crediton branch of the Royal British Legion.

The Mayor of Crediton, Cllr Frank Letch, said he was pleased that the council was able to recognise the efforts of members of the Armed Forces, past and present.

He said he was delighted that members of the local Royal British Legion and some ex-RAF staff attended the flag raising.

Mr Letch added that he always enjoyed meeting the veterans who attended the flag raising ceremony.

He said that his father was among those who had served.

John Higgs (94), chairman, Crediton branch of the Royal British Legion, paid tribute to those who had served or are currently serving in the Forces.

He said: “It is too easy to forget the sacrifices made by those in the Services and that is why it is important we hold events like this today.
