CREDITON Town Band ’s annual Spring Concert will take place at Crediton Parish Church, on Saturday, May 13, beginning at 7.30pm.

This year’s guests will be Sandford Primary School Choir.

The band is looking forward to playing a lot of old favourites as well as some new pieces to suit everyone’s taste.

Tickets, priced at £6 (children free), are available at Evans Newsagents or on the door on the night.

Part of the proceeds from the concert will go to support the Stephen Sykes cancer appeal.

Stephen is a 26-year-old celebrated trombone player, who appeared on a recent BBC Spotlight news item and has played with the likes of "Sting."

His father, who is also named Stephen, played the tuba at a Crediton Town Band Christmas concert some years ago.

In 2016 Stephen Jnr contracted Hodgkins Lymphoma and has undergone several difficult chemotherapy treatments, but none have been successful. His consultant concluded that his only hope of reducing the cancer enough to be able to receive a life-saving stem cell transplant is to treat him with the drug PDI blocker. Unfortunately the cost of this drug is beyond the funding of the NHS.

Stephen will have to raise £100,000 to purchase the treatment he needs to give him a chance to become well again.

The brass band world has taken up the baton to raise funds for Stephen with the Acrobat Challenge.

All trombonists and other brass players are invited to record themselves playing John Greenwood’s "The Acrobat," then upload it to "Facebook" or "Twitter" and tag it #Acrobat Challenge - nominating others to join them.
