One of the choir’s opening pieces: “For the beauty of the earth” by John Rutter was particularly apposite. There followed some well-known popular songs such as “A million dreams” from “The Greatest Showman” and the Love Medley from Abba’s “Mamma Mia”, where audience participation was welcome.

The varied programme also included piano solos by Tim Matthews and you could have heard a pin drop as he started the simple, slow, walking bass line of “Farewell to Stromness”. Choir member Annie Jones joined Tim to play a delightful piano duet – the “Berceuse” from Faure’s “Dolly Suite”. (“Are you sitting comfortably, everyone?”).
