MEMBERS of Crediton and District Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Support Group celebrated their 30th anniversary with an afternoon tea at the Boniface Centre in Crediton, on Monday, June 18.

A celebratory cake was made by Rachel Dart and afternoon tea was prepared by Hilary Partridge and served by Helen.

The cake was cut by the two remaining original members, Jenny Smith (organiser) and Pam Williams (who was the first secretary of the group).

A young physiotherapist called Louise first set up the group which was originally known as the Crediton MS Crack Group. The first formal meeting was held on June 10, 1988.

Members and supporters raise funds with events such as, car boot sales and bazaars.

The group also receives funding from legacies and private donations as well as small grants from the MS Society, local charities and donations from people who raise money through taking part in events such as charity runs.

Over the years the group has had the occasional holiday in London where they took in the sights and perhaps a show.

Twice weekly Jenny holds a jigsaw group at her home where members join in making puzzles, meet socially and enjoy tea and cake.

There are also four or five annual events and the group meets at Easter, Christmas and in August.

Some of the members also meet at Costa on the High Street every fortnight.

The local group is run by a team of support volunteers and aims to empower people affected by MS by giving out information, providing emotional support and signposting to local services.

Members of the group are always busy fundraising and anyone wishing to join them or help out can contact Jenny Smith on 01363 77483.
