ACCORDING to WHO/UNICEF two billion people in the world today do not have access to safe and hygienic toilets.
Without adequate toilets and sanitation children often are too ill to go to school and families get into debt as they pay for medical care. Imagine having to go out into the bush in the middle of the night to "spend a penny’". It is dark and dangerous and people are often attacked.
Tear Fund organises a "Toilet Twinning" scheme which enables families living in poverty in Asia and Africa to have lifesaving toilets, clean water, basic sanitation and hygiene education.
As part of the refurbishment project at Crediton Methodist Church, four of the toilets were refurbished and last year the World Church group organised a "Spend a Penny" evening of fun and games in order to raise money to twin these four toilets with new toilets in Myanmar, Mali, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
On Saturday, February 9, the World church Group arranged a further Toilet Twinning fun evening in order to raise funds to twin the remaining four toilets in the Church.
It was a great evening of games and amazingly not only resulted in sufficient funds to twin the remaining four toilets at £60 each (£240), but also a further £60 which will also be donated to Tear Fund to support its work.
Thank you to all who were involved in arranging this event and all who contributed so generously to this cause.
