LOCAL elections are taking place on May 4, 2023 and the Crediton Lawrence ward candidates for Mid Devon District Council are: Guy Cochran (Liberal Democrats), Laurie Laybourn (Labour), Frank Letch (Liberal Democrats), Sam Scougall-Knight  (Conservative).

Following are their election details.

The polls will be open between the hours of 7am and 10pm, and local residents will be asked to select two candidates as their representatives at Mid Devon District Council.

Elections will also be held for Crediton Town Council wards.

Voters are reminded to take along their Photo ID or they will be unable to vote!

Laurie Laybourn - Labour

Laurie is the Labour candidate for Crediton Lawrence and said: “We need new energy and ideas in Mid Devon.

"I am a trained economist. I work for charities fighting for a prosperous and fairer Britain.

"I want to bring my skills and experience to help Crediton. My priorities are tackling the cost of living crisis and supporting affordable, quality housing, so local people can prosper in their community.

"I will hold water companies to account on sewage, fighting back against the outrageous fouling of our rivers. I will make sure the climate crisis and air pollution remains a priority, helping secure a healthier town and a safe future for our children.

"And I will campaign for Crediton’s fair share of government investment, so we get ‘levelled up’ as well. I live locally and was born and raised in Okehampton.”

Guy Cochran - Liberal Democrat

Guy Cochran is married with three children and two grandchildren. He has lived and worked in Crediton for more than 30 years, retiring recently as a police officer.

Guy is active in the community. He is First Team manager and groundsman for Tedburn St Mary Football Club and has played cricket for Yeoford for three decades.

“I have always been involved in volunteering in the community I live in. I have been a local primary school governor, and I am the safeguarding officer in the local church. I also volunteer for the Crediton Ukrainian Café,” said Guy.

Guy joined Crediton Town Council in 2020 as a councillor and has been involved in making the town a safer place, with the installation of CCTV. He is on several Council committees overseeing the upkeep of allotments, public open spaces and he chairs the footpaths committee. He is currently investigating the options for a launderette for Crediton.

Frank Letch - Liberal Democrat

Frank Letch is a Crediton Town, Mid Devon and Devon County Council Councillor, and former Crediton Mayor.

It’s fair to say Frank is something of a legend in Crediton and you will always find him at the Crediton Farmers’ Market running one of his Councillor surgeries for local residents.

Frank is involved with “Devon In Sight”, Community Speedwatch and gets great satisfaction helping people solve problems such as fly-tipping and the dreaded potholes!
